Our BJJ classes for all levels provide a supportive environment for anyone looking to learn Jiu-Jitsu and self defense

At Downtown Jiu-Jitsu & Fitness in San Diego, our mission is to provide a welcoming environment for all students to practice BJJ. We believe in promoting physical fitness, mental discipline, and self-defense skills through martial arts.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and uses leverage, technique, and position to control and subdue an opponent with submission holds like chokes and joint locks. The benefits of training BJJ include improved physical fitness, self-defense skills, mental discipline, and developing strategies to overcome larger and stronger opponents.
This video is an example of a typical fundamental "Gi" class (Gi = Uniform).
A cardio boxing workout combines boxing techniques with exercises like jumping rope, shadowboxing, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to improve cardiovascular fitness and endurance. A sample workout could include a warm-up, rounds of boxing drills (jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts), and bodyweight exercises (burpees, push-ups, squats) performed in intervals. The workout could also include footwork and defensive movements like slips and bobbing to engage the whole body.
In No Gi Jiu-Jitsu the practitioners wear shorts and a rash guard or t-shirt instead of a traditional uniform (Gi). "No Gi" is a faster, more dynamic grappling style that emphasizes technique, agility, and body control over clothing grips. No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu is also called "submission wrestling" due to its focus on submissions without a Gi.
Jiu-Jitsu is a great way to help kids learn valuable life skills. Just a few of the benefits include coordination, discipline, confidence and improved physical fitness. Jiu-Jitsu also provides self-defense skills, emotional resilience, and social skills like teamwork and respect. Jiu-Jitsu teaches children how to handle challenging situations and can improve focus and academic performance by fostering problem-solving abilities.
